I am enraged when I storm out of his room, and his stupid dumb friend is lucky he left before I got a hold of him too. I cannot believe he would even consider going out to try and kill himself BASE jumping into a canyon after all of this. How can he be so ungrateful for the chance he got, so blind to the fact that he was literally dancing with death and survived? Why would he go back to doing that shit?

I get as far away from his room as I can, then stop to catch my breath. My anger has literally taken it away. The fear of him going out to do that and never coming back has me in a chokehold. That and the fact that I just blurted out the L-word to him. I just said it. I said I love him, and I do—I hadn’t even said it to myself, and I said it to him without warning.

He just looked at me, and then I panicked. Now, I am hiding in the hallway, trying not to think about it. About him, and that kiss, and how he does not care about his mortality. God, he is infuriating. How can he not see how much he has to live for instead of the insanity? I don’t know if he’d listen to reason. He is set in his stubborn ways.

Allie catches me in the kitchen looking for leftovers, so I can eat my feelings. “I can make you something,” she says, and I shake my head.

“No, thanks. I am not hungry. I just felt like something small.” It’s a half lie.

“Brendon gets under your skin?” she asks. “Is he in a mood?” He’s in something, but I am not going back in there to check now, not after I said I love him. I need a while to process it and to prepare for the humiliating fact that he might not feel the same way about me.

“No, I think it might just be me.” I sigh, and tuck into the leftover dessert I found in the fridge. “He had a visitor.”

“Zero,” she says. “I heard him come in. You can’t miss him when he arrives.” I nod and swallow the chocolate in my mouth.

“They are planning a BASE jumping trip.” I can’t hide the anger in my voice. “They want to throw themselves off a cliff into a canyon and then hike, and rock climb back out. It is like he broke his common sense in the accident too.” I am angry. I have a right to my feelings. Allie listens to me venomously ranting.

“That’s their thing. They chase adrenaline.” She shrugs like she expected this. “Brendon can’t sit still. How this stint in bed hasn’t killed him is beyond me. It is just how he is, if he’s not doing something that gets his heart racing, he isn’t living.”

“There are other ways to get your heart pumping. Diving off cliffs doesn’t need to be one of them.
